Press Release

The Chemical Industries Association yesterday welcomed Lord Mandelson's announced package of investment in North East manufacturing.

The Government is committing to a £20m investment in the Wilton International site (the location of a significant chemicals cluster) to strengthen and sustain competitiveness and employment in chemical businesses.  A further £30m has also been agreed to support Teeside projects that will help deliver the UK's low-carbon advanced manufacturing future.

The investment will include the re-development of industrial land and infrastructure, investment to establish bio-based materials, to reduce the energy use of industry in the area, for initiatives on carbon capture and storage and support for technology transfer and new business practices.

Speaking from Wilton, Steve Elliott, Chemical Industries Association's Chief Executive said, "I am delighted to see this tangible commitment by Government to the people and businesses of the North East.

Only two weeks ago at the CIA Annual Dinner Lord Mandelson acknowledged the importance 'of a strong chemical and pharmaceutical industry as an essential part of our industrial base' in the UK and our low carbon, advanced manufacturing future, so it is excellent to see words turning to actions so rapidly."
