Press Release

REACHReady surveyed its members for the second time this spring to find out how they were getting on in the SIEFs.

The main outcome of the survey was that one third of the SIEFs working towards a 2010 deadline had still not appointed a Lead Registrant. Significantly, 30% of respondents had little confidence that they would meet all their registration deadlines in time even where a lead had been appointed. It became very clear from the survey and the comments received that there will be many companies who will have some tough business decisions to take post 1 December 2010.  Many companies felt that meeting the deadline was out of their immediate control as they were so reliant on the lead, (who was also their competitor), completing their obligations in time.

Director of REACHReady, Jo Lloyd, said "The most common complaint from SIEF members was a continued lack of communication on progress, coupled with real difficulties in identifying who has taken on the Lead Registrant role, even when one had been identified to ECHA."

The prevalence of rogue SIEF formation facilitators which had caused so many outbursts in our last survey, though still a cause for concern, now seems to be contained to one or two perpetrators.  All respondents reported little activity in SIEFs with 2013 and 2018 deadlines.

"The good news", said Lloyd, "is that there has been a dramatic improvement in the progress being made in the SIEFs but there is still a long way to go. REACHReady will carry out another survey over the summer when hopefully we will see even more progress".
